The Alpenzoo

The Alps are home to a wide variety of habitats in a small area: valleys with varied cultural landscapes, lakes, rivers, floodplains, moors, inner-Alpine heat islands, deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests, Alpine grasslands and even ice regions. In addition, there are strong regional differences, depending on the type of rock, relief and micro-climate. This is why the Alps are home to an astonishing diversity of life. It is estimated that 30,000 animal species (mainly insects) and 4,500 higher plant species are native to the Alps. At the Alpenzoo, we can only show a small part of this enormous diversity of species. These are mainly vertebrates, approx. 20 of the 80 mammal species, 60 of the approx. 200 alpine bird species, 11 of the 15 alpine reptile species, 6 of the 21 alpine amphibian species and almost all the fish species in the Alps. The Alpenzoo is home to a total of around 2,000 individuals from the animal kingdom.

The location

Our zoo grounds are on a slope and also have steeper sections. The paths are mostly covered with asphalt, with some terrain steps having to be negotiated via stairs. For the tour, you will need about 2 to 3 hours.

Access to the Alpenzoo is largely barrier-free. We are committed to making access to the Alpenzoo as barrier-free as possible: at the Alpenzoo, we have wide paths throughout and several accessible enclosures and aviaries.

Assistance dogs (with ID, vaccination card and identification blanket) are exempt from the ban on dogs being allowed into the zoo. The valid vaccination card must be presented at the ticket desk.

The Alpenzoo offers special guided tours for people with disabilities and special needs with our “Bear Mobile”.
