Etruscan shrew

The Etruscan shrew is the smallest mammal in Europe, and one of the smallest mammals in the world. Etruscan shrews have an enormous basal metabolic rate – their heart, for example, beats up to 1500 times per minute. They, therefore, have to eat many times their own body weight every day and are constantly on the lookout for food, especially at dusk and at night.
