{"id":2161,"date":"2025-11-10T12:36:31","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T11:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpenzoo.at\/?p=2161"},"modified":"2025-11-10T12:36:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T11:36:32","slug":"alpenzoo-innsbruck-nimmt-virtuell-an-der-80-jahreskonferenz-der-weltzoovereinigung-waza-teil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alpenzoo.at\/en\/alpenzoo-innsbruck-nimmt-virtuell-an-der-80-jahreskonferenz-der-weltzoovereinigung-waza-teil\/","title":{"rendered":"Alpenzoo Innsbruck takes part virtually in the 80th annual conference of the World Zoo Association (WAZA)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Innsbruck, 05 November 2025 <\/strong>&nbsp;- Alpenzoo Innsbruck is once again part of the international community of progressive zoos and aquariums this year: For the <strong>90th anniversary of the World Zoo Association<\/strong>&nbsp;(World Association of Zoos and Aquariums - WAZA), the director of the Alpenzoo <strong>Dr Andr\u00e9 Stadler<\/strong>&nbsp;virtually at the <strong>80th WAZA Annual Conference 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;which was organised for the first time this year at Cali Zoo in Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anniversary conference was all about <strong>nine decades of global co-operation<\/strong>&nbsp;in the areas of <strong>Species conservation, education, animal welfare and scientific progress<\/strong>. Representatives from all over the world - from zoos and aquariums to regional and national associations - came together to discuss current challenges and future strategies for the protection of biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global issues - shared responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference focussed on current topics such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201eThe Zoo as a Living Lab in the Anthropocene: New Pathways for Impactful Research\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- Zoos as research laboratories of the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eZoos and Global Conservation Institutions\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- Strategic partnerships in international species conservation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eGlobal Trends in Creative Exhibit Design\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- Innovative ways of presenting animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eFuture Proofing our Sector\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- The next generation of zoo and aquarium professionals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eDisease Outbreaks in a Connected World\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- Global health risks and resilience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eWildlife Trafficking: Global Coordination &amp; Local Realities\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- International cooperation against wildlife trafficking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201eCryopreservation for Species Recovery\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0- Biobanking as a key technology in species conservation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A particular highlight was the <strong>New edition of the WAZA animal welfare strategy <\/strong>(World Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare Strategy 2025). This landmark document provides a <strong>Scientifically sound and practice-orientated basis for promoting animal welfare<\/strong>&nbsp;in zoological institutions worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr Stadler: \u201eGlobal cooperation is crucial\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alpine Zoo Director <strong>Dr Andr\u00e9 Stadler<\/strong>&nbsp;emphasises the importance of such international platforms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eThe challenges in species and animal protection are global and can only be overcome together. The WAZA conference offers us the opportunity to learn from each other, create synergies and develop innovative approaches for research, education and sustainability.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He takes away important impulses for the work of the Alpine Zoo from the conference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New approaches in educational work<\/strong>, to further sensitise visitors to species protection and biodiversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Current findings on the Animal Welfare Strategy (Animal Welfare Strategy 2025)<\/strong>\u00a0and their implementation in European zoos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ideas for sustainable exhibition and enclosure designs<\/strong>, that combine animal welfare, visitor experience and environmental awareness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To the <strong>Anniversary video<\/strong>&nbsp;The Alpine Zoo also contributed to the WAZA's report on \u201c90 Years of Impact - The Power of Community Action\u201d. It is important to the Alpine Zoo to actively contribute to WAZA and to keep the zoo up to date, as well as to promote the protection of species and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Alpenzoo will also fully support WAZA's new Animal Welfare Strategy and apply it to its operations in order to ensure the well-being of our animal inhabitants in line with the latest state of knowledge,\u201d emphasises Stadler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Alpine Zoo and the WAZA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)<\/strong>&nbsp;is the global umbrella organisation for scientifically managed zoos and aquariums. Since its foundation in Basel in 1935, WAZA has promoted international exchange, scientific research and the protection of endangered animal species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Alpenzoo has been a WAZA member since 1979<\/strong>.
