Reptiles

Reptiles are cold-blooded and, therefore, dependent on the ambient temperature. As the Alps have a rather cool and changeable climate and the winters are long, around 24 reptile species live in the Alps. The 8 spacious terrariums show a habitat typical of the respective reptile species with the corresponding flora, e.g. holm oaks for the pearl lizards and gentian for the adder. The enclosures are exposed to the south-east and are, therefore, warmed by the morning sun, which is favourable for the “working temperature” of the reptiles, which are warm to the touch.

The design and planting of the terrariums provide sunbathing areas and shaded areas in combination with radiant heaters and roof covers as rain protection. They give the animals places to retreat to, but also favourite spots where they can stay longer and be clearly visible. All species reproduce in the terrariums. The eggs are usually placed near the radiant heaters, where they develop until they are ready to hatch. Frost-proof burrows filled with leaves and litter are available for hibernation.
