Birds

The Alpine bird world – with its wealth of colours and shapes – is particularly suitable for promoting the beauty and conservation value of the Alpine region. The Alpenzoo is also dedicated exclusively to the bird species found in the Alps. The diverse landscapes – warm, wide valleys, gently rolling hills, deep gorges, mountain forests, alpine meadows and high mountains – provide a habitat for roughly 200 breeding birds and just as many migratory visitors. Keeping and breeding native bird species is difficult because the natural course of the year (spring – winter) must also be reflected in the food composition, pair combination and aviary design.

The focus of bird keeping is on birds of prey, hens and particularly delicate birds that are rarely kept in any other zoo, such as dippers and goldcrests.
