European pond turtle
The European pond turtle is the only turtle species found in the Alps. It prefers to live in stagnant waters with muddy bottoms and abundant aquatic vegetation. In the south-west Alps it can also be found in streams with stony bottoms. Quiet, sunny forest ponds or alluvial forest pools are its favourite habitats.
