Alpine marmot
Marmots spend up to 7 months hibernating deep underground, snuggled up close together. Occasionally they wake up to urinate in a side passage called a "latrine". Hibernation helps to conserve energy during this barren time: Body temperature, respiration and pulse are then reduced to a minimum. Energy is supplied by "Mankei lard", a fat deposit that marmots eat during summer and autumn. The family group consists of a dominant pair and their young. Only the alpha female has offspring. Its aggression against lower-ranking females prevents them from reproducing. The main species is the golden eagle. Individual "guards" stand upright in the terrain and keep an eye on the surroundings. In case of danger, they warn the clan members with their shrill cry, the "whistle".
- Marmots live in family groups. An adult pair lives with the offspring of several generations. A marmot family can have up to 20 members.
