AMPHIBIA

The aqua-terrarium contains various Frogs and tailed amphibians to see. Strikingly large, up to about 15 cm long, the Great crested newtsin which the males wear a high, serrated crest on their back and a silvery longitudinal stripe on their tail during the mating season. Great crested newts can live in water all year round, in some places they have a longer terrestrial phase. The same applies to the much smaller Pond newtwhich also has a crest running over its back and tail and is covered with black spots all over its body, including on the orange belly.

The Sea frog is the largest of the frogs in Europe and can be heard from afar with its loud, almost bell-like croaking, as you can see for yourself at the touch of a button in the "Voices in the reeds" display case. A separate family within the amphibians are the Tree frogs. With their adhesive discs on their toes, they climb effortlessly upwards in the sun-drenched bushes, adapting their skin colour to the respective substrate. In contrast to the lateral sound bubbles of the sea frogs, the tree frogs have a sound bubble on their lower jaw with which they produce their relatively loud mating calls.

In the same terrarium, in addition to the pond newts, the Yellow-bellied toads housed. The upper side of the yellow-bellied toad is camouflage-coloured grey-black. In case of danger, they turn on their backs and show their yellow belly side as a warning signal to predators. Their mating call is relatively quiet and sounds like "ung-ung".
